Echo's Lament
Echo’s Lament
Echo’s Lament is a short grid-based puzzle game built for a game jam with the theme Echo & Reflection.
Inspired by the Greek myth of Narcissus and Echo, you control two characters whose movements are forever tied together. Narcissus moves through the world as you choose — and Echo follows, not as a copy, but as a reflection: every step you take, she takes in the opposite direction.
How it plays
- Move Narcissus (yellow) with WASD or the arrow keys
- Echo (blue) moves automatically in the mirrored direction — up becomes down, left becomes right
- Each puzzle is a small grid of floors, walls, and exits
- Both characters must stand on their exits at the same time to complete a level
- Plan ahead: a move that helps Narcissus can trap Echo, and vice versa
- Some levels limit how many moves you can make before you fail
Think in pairs. Every input is really two inputs.
In the myth, >span class="font-semibold" data-streamdown="strong">Echo was a nymph cursed to repeat only the last words spoken to her — forever answering, never leading. Narcissus became obsessed with his own reflection, unable to look away from the image in the water.
Echo’s Lament turns that tragedy into a puzzle:
- Narcissus is the one you steer
- Echo is the one who answers your movement — always present, always inverted
- Reflection is not just a theme in the story; it is the rule of the game
You are not solving a maze for one person. You are trying to bring two doomed figures to their exits at once — separated by the grid, linked by every choice you make.

Game Jam
Created for a game jam with the theme Echo & Reflection.
This project explores how myth, mechanics, and theme can say the same thing: what we do echoes outward, and sometimes the hardest puzzles are the ones where you are never truly alone on the board.

Level 1 to Level 2 is way too big of a skill gap but I like the idea, very nice
